HIST 112 Digital Artifact Project 2018

Hello and welcome to my Digital Artifact Project for History 112, Roman History!

When you are ready to begin, please head over to the "Overview" page. From there, feel free to read through the posts in any order you wish. However, if you wish the follow the story of Aemilia Maximia in a linear manner, read the posts in this order: Clothes & Beauty; Social Life & Religion; Health & Hygiene; Marriage & Children; The Household; and Food, Drink, & Dining.

In addition to the sources named in each post, a full list of sources can be found on the "General Sources" page.

Happy learning!

Overview

These aspects of everyday life in Imperial Rome will be covered in this project, with a focus on upper-class women:
  • Clothing & Beauty
  • Food, Drink, & Dining
  • The Household
  • Marriage & The Family
  • Health & Hygiene
  • Social Life & Religion
In addition, you will see seperate segments at the beginning of each post, written in a narrative style. These pieces are stories about a fictional woman, Aemilia Maximia, and her everyday life as an upper-class married woman. You will also read about her husband, Valerius Claudius Aurelius; her two daughters, Claudia Major and Claudia Minor; and her son, Marcus Claudius Aurelius. Note: this is a completely fictional account created by myself. I drew on the information found for this project to create the scenes which you will read, but I also took some artistic license. Our knowledge of everyday life in Rome is limited, so I have made educated guesses to fill in the details and make it more enjoyable to read overall.

To start, watch this video that details the lives of four young, upper-class women in Rome:
